MANILA, Philippines – Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu has died at the age of 48 from pneumonia, her family confirmed to Taiwanese media on Monday, February 3.
Hsu, best known for her portrayal of Dong Shan Cai in the hit 2001 series Meteor Garden, traveled to Japan over the Lunar New Year holidays, where she contracted influenza, and later developed pneumonia.
“I was grateful to be her sister in this life and that we got to care for and spend time with each other. I will always be grateful to her and miss her!” her sister said in a statement seeded to the Taiwanese media through her agent.
Hsu leaves behind her husband Koo Jun-yup, a South Korean DJ and music producer. They wed in 2022.
Hsu, who was also referred to as “Big S” in the Taiwanese showbiz industry, also starred in Meteor Garden II, which aired in 2002. She appeared alongside her original co-actors, Jerry Yan, Vic Chou, Ken Chu, and Vanness Wu.
Her other acting credits include the series Eternity: A Chinese Ghost Story (2003), Summer’s Desire (2010), and the films Silk (2006) and Croczilla and Motorway, which both premiered in 2012. – Rappler.com
